万夏的洞见:一个永无止境的景象

“在德彪西的《大海》音乐中没有个人情感。但它们对你的影响甚至比大自然更加强烈。” 

和德彪西相反,万夏在拍摄大海时消除了叙事。他把照片排列起来作为正式评论,不像音乐形式,更像是一种书面语言,类似诗歌的韵文。他的图像通常与人物或外部因素有关,这些因素在他手里组合成不同寻常的艺术作品。李赫特认为德彪西的音乐所表达的情感比看海人的实际感受更加强烈。万夏的摄影作品同样不谈个人情感,但它们确实传达了艺术家以另外一种更加庄严纯粹的观察层面看海时的感想,从而引导观众自己理解作品的意义。

摄影师的眼睛是一个能让优秀艺术家从一开始就脱颖而出的因素,并让他们的全部作品都独具特色。对于万夏来说,能够获得如此高境界的还有一个因素:那就是他排列作品的方式——不只是对同一拍摄对象的不同照片的排列,而且还在于他在每一幅作品上打的洞所组成的线。在2017年秋季北京展出的这一系列作品中,他在玩转地平线,或是用水平的洞加强它,或是用垂直的线背离它。该系列的时间跨度是2008年到今年,这些作品从一开始就在追求一定的美学标准,并随时间不断发展,令人陶醉。

There are no personale motions in Debussy’smusic.They affect you even more strongly than nature. Contrarily toDebussy, WanXia eliminates the narrative when he photographs the sea. Byarranging hisphotographs, he sets them as formal comments—less comparable withmusical formsthan to written language, and similar to the verses of a poem.Hisimages areoften related to personages or elements from outside, which hecombines inunusual

compositions.Richter speaks of Debussy’s musicastransferring strongeremotions than the actual impression of watching thesea.Wan Xia’s photographicobjects equally do not speak of personal emotions.Instead,they transfer theimpression of the artist watching the sea onto another levelof observation.This impression is more sublime, leading the viewer to his orher own interpretation.

The eye of the photographer is onecomponent that, from the first moment, makes good artists remarkable anddistinguishes their oeuvre. For Wan Xia, there is a second aspect that receivesa high level of importance: the way in which he arranges his works—not only howhe arranges the different images that come together in one photo object butalso the line that he draws with empty holes, which are added to every work. Inthe series of this exhibition, in autumn 2017 in Beijing, he is playing withthe line of the horizon, either intensifying it through his levels of holes ordeviating from it through vertical lines. The series spans from 2008 until thisyear, and it presents a fascinating development of works that, since the verybeginning,have pursued certain criteria of aesthetics.
